A: "The catalyst for finding a secure, browser based file access service for staff and students was the migration of the University staff and student computing environment from Novell to Microsoft for desktop management, authentication and file & print services.

The fundamental design principle used during this migration was ‘like for like’, that is, all existing services supported by Novell needed to be available once migrated to Microsoft. One of these deployed services was HTTPS file access hosted by Novell NetStorage and this service needed to be migrated to the Microsoft based post-migration environment."

Q: What were the needs that launched your search for a solution like FileWay?

A: "During the engineering beta testing phase of our project it was found that many of our users (mainly our teachers) browsed with an Apple/MAC (non Internet Explorer) from home and the Outlook Webmail Portal did not work properly for them. Of special concern to us was that the same users could not make the Directory/Document sharing functionality work.

This lead to the Internet search for alternative solutions, where I first found FileWay and Everywhere Networks".

A: "There was another earlier solution we investigated which implemented a SharePoint environment. Due to cost and complexity factors, this option was quickly dropped and left us focussed primarily on the FileWay path.

Additional factors that kept FileWay as the best solution contender were it's ability to enable remote file access functionality across multiple platforms (Microsoft, Linux and MAC) using multiple browsers ( IE7, Firefox and Safari)".

Q: What was the deciding factor(s) that made you select FileWay?

A: "Beside the affordable pricing, there was the fantastic support that we received from Everywhere Networks during our initial trial phase. Whenever we found any technical issues, their consistently speedy and excellent response convinced us that we were on the right path with FileWay".

Q: What was your experience with the install?

A: "We were at that time (Q1/Q2 2008) one of the first customers using FileWay in combination with Exchange 2007. Since Exchange 2007 is quite different in many aspects from Exchange 2003 (which was the version that FileWay supported at that time), it obviously lead to many problematic issues. Everywhere Networks set up an identical environment to ours inside their lab, replicated the problems and quickly resolved all issues to our satisfaction".

Q: How has FileWay performed to date?

A: "As it usually is with something which does the job it promises to do, there are currently no negative issues known to me. After running this solution for the past 6 months, our experience is that FileWay is a very stable product!".

Q: What are your plans for expansion with FileWay?

A: "From a commercial point of view (number of licenses) we are already at the point we need to be for a full implementation for all schools in the City of Bern.

The first stage rollout has reached approx one third of our users. The next stage in April/May and the final one in July/August, will reach the target user numbers of approximately 1,400 teachers and nearly 9,000 students. (As our younger students in the 1st to 3rd school class range will most probably not need this remote file access functionality, our projected number of student users will be a bit lower. From the 4th class on however, the computer and all “surrounding” services (including FileWay) will be part of the study program and “tools” to incorporate into the study workflow)".

A: "The incredible support we received from Everywhere Networks was one of the best that I and the engineering crew at the IT department of the town government (which was the “doing” part at our end of the technical implementation) have experienced.

Again a very big compliment to your support crew (and especially to Janet Hunt!)".

Here's a simple and powerful way to set up a training program for selected users using FileWay.

The major benefit of this approach is that the simple inclusion (or deletion) of any user from a specific training group (using your Active Directory), will automatically (by FileWay) determine the access pivileges of that user to all the shared resources of that group.

1. What is FileWay?

FileWay is a secure, Web-based remote access application that enables registered users to access files and documents as authorized shares on specified file servers from any location, using a browser-enabled device such as a desktop PC, laptop, PDA, or public Internet terminals.

FileWay is ideal for any organization that needs to extend its internal resources cost-effectively to teleworkers, field employees, partners, suppliers, travelers, students, and other remote users.

3. How will my enterprise benefit from FileWay?

By providing cost-effective and secure remote access to defined resources such as email, files, and folders, FileWay ensures uninterrupted access whether a user is working, at home, at a customer site, or on the road. 4. How can a user access FileWay?

FileWay is an internally installed standalone .NET Web service and it can be accessed directly, launched for Outlook Web Access (OWA), launched from your corporate portal, FileWay lets users sign in using any standard Web browser to access their shared resources. 5. How does FileWay work?

Administrators configure FileWay with our FileWay Manager which is a Wizard tool that quickly designates network resources to be shared for remote access. FileWay Manager connects to your Active Directory and maintains a database of user accessible resources and shares. When a user signs in to FileWay , the server authorizes the user and displays the shared drives, folders, special folders, files, and network drives on the user’s machine(s), and enables the user to read, edit, create, download, and upload files as needed. Users only can access and see the shares hey have access to.

6. What does FileWay access?

Typically uses are granted access to the same networks file shares and resources they would access as if they were at their desktop. Including; folders, files, documents, and favorites as if working at the office.

7. What actions can a user perform remotely using FileWay?

A user can view and sort all shared documents on his desktop remotely. He has the ability to upload, download, zip and download, sort, rename and delete files as easily as if he was working directly on the office workstation. Moreover, folders can be opened in same window or in a new window to browse, rename, delete and add new folders. Other functionalities include create/delete a folder and a shortcut, upload and download to/from folders, copy and move to folders and add network drives and send files via email.

8. What is SecureView and is it built into FileWay?

SecureView is our secure document viewing technology. This built-in technology is more than a feature... it handles the issue of downloading documents and NOT leaving them behind on untrusted workstations. The SecureView built in to FileWay allows for the viewing of documents and files contained in the users accessible shares.

9 Will FileWay work with my existing network infrastructure?

FileWay integrates easily with existing corporate infrastructure such as NTFS, Netware, NFS, Secure Web, reverse proxy, Exchange (Outlook Web Access), Lotus Notes (iNotes), virus protection servers, the Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration Server (ISA), and Apache Reverse Proxy, and can be used with any Mac or PC hardware system. It has been tested and installed along with many of the leading SSL-VPN products from; Whale, Cisco, Nortel, Array, Juniper and Aventail.

10 Is FileWay secure to use?

FileWay integrates fully with existing security systems and policies and allows only recognized and managed users to access defined resources. Standards-based access and authentication protocols make FileWay compatible with many third-party security products such as firewalls, proxy servers, and the Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration Server (ISA). Access to files and network drives is centrally controlled using existing authentication and firewall schemes. In case of absence of a reverse proxy, FileWay uses its own .NET proxy that resides in the DMZ (demilitarized zone) and minimizes outside exposure of the company’s private network.

11 Does FileWay use encryption?

FileWay uses the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), a worldwide standard for encryption over HTTP, to encrypt all authentication information and communication between users and the server.

12. What operating system does FileWay server require?

Microsoft Windows 2003 or 2008 Server.

13. Is FileWay scalable?

FileWay is built as a internally running Web Service and hence leverages standard scalability products like load balancers and clusters to achieve high availability and scalability. It typically takes only minutes to deploy.

14. Is it easy to install and configure FileWay?

FileWay can be installed and configured quickly and easily using any Web browser, a large site installation typically takes less than a day.

15. How many users does one FileWay Server support?

The total number of users FileWay Server can support is limited only by the capacity of the server it is running on and the network in which it is deployed. FileWay is not tied to a user limit unless specified by the licensing agreement. A dual processor machine with 2 G Ram can support over 5-10,000 concurrent users.
